The Universe is an endless source of surprises and mysteries. At one end of the scale, the angstrom level and below, there are the building blocks of matter, both living and inert. At the other end, at the light year scale, we have galaxies and stars, seething cauldrons of atoms. In these two worlds, so far from our everyday lives, intuition is no longer of any use, because physics is turned on its head: quantum mechanics and the general theory of relativity are two irreconcilable siblings, each reigning supreme over the two extreme dimensions of the Universe. To explore these worlds, the physicists use highly sophisticated and very large technological facilities: satellites, accelerators, radiation sensors and image analysis software are just some of the weapons in their arsenal, deployed within large international collaborative ventures.
